A long planned visit to the Betty Ford Alpine Garden in Vail Colorado was fabulous. About an acre of cultivated gardens exhibits alpine plants from around the world. Many other features include a lovely children’s garden, visitor center and exceptionally good educational signage. A must visit two hours west of Denver

After our visit to Betty Ford Alpine Gardens we headed south and west to the Collegiate Range where multiple peaks over 14,000 are found. The area is accessible via roads and trails and provides superb opportunities to see alpine plants in habit.

We stopped by the remarkable Huntington Library, Art Museum and Garden. Surely one of America’s great treasures with exceptional gardens and plant collections. Desert species are well represented. Distinct Chinese and Japanese gardens are among the finest in the Americas.

Mesa Verde National Park
Famous for the globally unique cliff dwellings, Mesa Verde is also home to a unique Juniper- Pinyon Pine “pigmy” forest. Several large fires in the past two decades may be due to climate change.

A visit to the beautiful Los Angeles Arboretum and Botanical Garden coincided with the fabulous Plumeria Festival. This garden is featured in our current articles, it’s a truly wonderful place for a casual visit or serious botanizing.

We spent the day botanizing the High Sierra with some Outward Bound staff. Alpine flora abounds, particularly around swift stream courses and moist meadows. Thus far, fires have not effected the area where we are near Yosemite and Tioga Pass.
